Flooding Information

This purpose of this page is to spread information about what happens in Shireoaks during a flood event and also a link at the bottom for more information from other agencies.
Shireoaks have a group of Volunteer Flood Wardens, who will be alerted in the event of a flood warning/incident. Due to the nature of flood events social media is the quickest form of getting information out, the Facebook page which is used is https://www.facebook.com/groups/481616852477396/.
In the past there was a leaflet drop of the whole village (below is a copy of what went out) if you are vulnerable, unsure if your property is a known flood risk, would like to become a volunteer flood warden or anything else mentioned on the leaflet please do get in touch with the Parish Council Clerk from the contact page and they will pass the information onto the flood wardens. This information is not used for any other purpose apart from keeping people safe during a flood incident.
Please do share this information with any neighbours that may not use the internet and encourage them to give their details to the clerk if they have concerns.

The Parish Council have invested in a container (with another one coming soon!) with resources which is located at the back of the Car Park for the Village Hall. As soon as warnings are received, volunteer flood wardens will try to get down there as soon as possible. There are a number of sandbags which can be distributed to those who need them, volunteers may ask you which property you are from when you come, this is because it helps to see which properties are at threat of flood to be able to keep these on the radar for any future flood events. Sandbags are for peoples homes only to help protect those at risk. We ask that if you do take some sandbags please use them to protect your home by putting at your doors and not garden gates. Sandbags cannot be taken back to the reserves they must be disposed of they cannot be used twice. If your home has flooded before you may be able to get help to protect your homes in the future, your local Bassetlaw Councillor can help you with this.
Flood Wardens have also been trained to safely close roads, as residents will know we have two roads which can flood quite quickly these are underneath the Railway Bridge on Shireoaks Road and Spring Lane (there are risk assessments for other roads that can be closed too). These will be closed at certain trigger points. The biggest ask of residents is if you see signs warning you of road closures please do take these seriously. If they have had cause to to put the signs out they will be actively monitoring the situation to see if they are still needed. Roads can be very misleading and water can hide dips which can make water look deceptively shallow. Several cars have been lost to flood water in Shireoaks, so please do turn around and find an alternative safe route. After a flood roads do have to be sanitised after so this can take some time especially if other areas of the county have been affected. Google maps from experience closing roads can be surprisingly slow to mark roads closed so please follow the signs advice and not Google maps.
